I read Catcher In The Rye for the first time when I was 19 or 20 and couldn't bring myself to identify with Holden. I found him to be narcissistic. A whiner. I'm sure I would have read it differently as a 14 or 15 year old. Now, as a 26 year old, I'm gearing up to teach the book to 15- and 16-year-olds. I'm looking forward to reading it again, just to see how it's changed as I have, and I really look forward to seeing how today's teenagers react to such an icon as Holden. And now, as the collective internets are poring over the significance of the book, I'm all the more excited to teach it. I'm also curious about how others' perspectives have changed over the years, so I think I'm going to encourage others to read it with me over the course of a weekend, and see if it has changed for them too. Great post!
