Thousand Autumns was brilliant. I fell under its spell. Mitchell’s storytelling is rich and wonderfully self-referential, full of repeating patterns, adventurous twists and unspeakable horror. And his emphasis on “interpretation” helps separate the book from more mainstream adventure novels; in Thousand Autumns, a message (of which there are hundreds) is only as clear (or truthful) as its messenger — and all interpretation seems to be a creative act. Big ups to Chamblin’s for stocking a used copy this summer!

I hate this guy so much. Or maybe I really want to hate him considering how much I hated Cloud Atlas, but every time I see one of these videos I find him so hard to hate because he seems like such a gentle fellow. So maybe I don’t hate him, but it will be a long time before anyone will be able to convince me to read another one of his novels.
