I think Kafka the most important writer of the 20th century and Joyce the best. For Americans in that time, I’d place Gaddis second to Pynchon in both categories, importance and talent.
If I could edit the tweet (which I put little thought into, to be honest), I’d add “second half of the twentieth c.” or something and give Joyce the first half of the century. I always forget Kafka was a 20th century man. I am less enthusiastic about Pynchon than I once was, but I need to reread GR.
