The Cardinal looks good in his red robe that symbolizes the Blood of Jesus. Or is it a scarlet robe that symbolizes carnal lust? In either case, he looks like a well fed man. The book is feeding his smile. And, unless I‘m mistaken, the book is seated between his legs. Erect. With a stiff spine and a dog-eared page to show pet use.
The stiff spine’s trajectory, for the censors, is towards Almighty God in heaven. It’s trajectory for the dionysian rabble is somewhere else.
This is a lovely picture. Hilarious and dear. Very Rabelaisian.
Jolly old fellow. I like art criticism in that you can see any thing you want and say any thing you want about it. Cardinal delight?
