I have long maintained that monks working In the ancient scriptoriums were the often greatest doodlers of all time. This anonymous artist couldn’t have had a more enjoyable time; or minimally, this monk, like Hieronymus Bosch, he figured out an excellent way to name, tame and channel the deepest fear amongst medieval Christians — namely, suffering eternal damnation in Hell.
