I had the great fortune to see Bernini’s sculpture of Daphne and Apollo in Rome when I was 20 and desperately asking myself what I wanted to do with my life. I remember writing home saying: I want to SEE like that! The details–the leaves, the toes, her expression as she morphed into a laurel tree, the touch of Apollo’s fingers in her side so soft even though it’s solid marble… Great art, great vision never ceases to inspire.
