An exquisite love letter to Werner’s friend. The butterfly sequence was as if Nature herself had choreographed it. I assume these scenes were from Herzog’s magnum opus about the lust for treasure consuming a leader and his crew. In the making of this film, the jungle nearly consumed Herr Herzog, his cast and crew, film, cameras and all.

Thank you for posting this! I had the honor of meeting Werner Herzog a couple of times back in the 1980s, including the night Fitzcarraldo premiered at the New York Film Festival. Most certainly the most interesting person I have ever met.
