When I was growing up in New York during the 1950s, “Hide and Seek” was in the MoMA permanent collection and prominently displayed. I was very disappointed to learn, decades later, that it was no longer there. Did they de-accession it? (Nasty term.) Was it hidden away in a cellar to make room for.. what? Some piece of kitsch by Jeff Koons?
