  1. I first saw the Vereshchagin painting “Defeat—Requiem “ at the Guggenheim when they did a

    historical survey of Russian visual art around 15 years ago and I was knocked out. It’s on his Wikipedia page along with his very interesting biography: gentry family, decorated officer in the tsar’s army who thought people should see the reality of war, as he had.
