“My Species” — Jane Hirshfield

“My Species”
by
Jane Hirshfield

a small purple artichoke
boiled
in its own bittered
and darkening
waters
grows tender,
grows tender and sweet
patience, I think,
my species
keep testing the spiny leaves
the spiny heart
