“I’ll Never” — Trans Am

  1. In the fall of ’97—or maybe it was the spring of ’98—my memory is a bit hazy—I met Mike Gersten, who produced and edited (and probably really directed, in large part) this music video.

We met when Mike invited me to go see Trans Am play live in Ybor City, in Tampa. Mike would drive me and two other guys and his older brother down there from Gainesville.

I guess he invited me because he was friends with my roommate/friend, and had looked through my records at one point (I had bought the first Trans Am record after seeing them on their first tour—still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen). I was also in a French class with his girlfriend, who actually parlayed the invitation: “Hey, my boyfriend wants to talk to you.”

So he drove us down to Ybor, five of us altogether. Maybe half an hour out of Gainesville his older brother Adam insisted he pull into a gas station; Adam emerged with quarts of malt liquor, which we, the passengers, imbibed over Mike’s mild annoyance.

We were pretty drunk when we got to Ybor City, with the exception of Mike, of course, who secured parking and got us into the club. Once inside, Adam bought a beer, and, needing to piss, handed it off to his brother to hold. Mike, sans 21+ bracelet, was almost instantly ejected from the club. He sat outside while we watched Trans Am imitate Judas Priest. Then he drove us home. We went on to become great friends, and I love the guy to this day. And I love that he made a music video for Trans Am nearly two decades after getting kicked out of one of their concerts for holding his brother’s beer.
