Well, I think there are a lot of tensions and ambiguities in the poem—on the surface, it seems to be about a friendly chat that interrupts work. But there’s also an underlying anxiety/annoyance in the verb “plod”—at least to me, which meets up to the shout that was not—“What is it?” But ultimately, I think it’s just about that “visit” (which is the real meet up of “what is it?”).
