One of my favorite artists, unafraid, as was Andre Gide, to explore psychological positions that could be interpreted as disturbing. I also enjoy his two-canvas works – an innovative re-interpretation of collage and the Picture within the Picture. I have written about him under that title and under Immoralism in my essays – all to be found online on my blog anthonyhowelljournal – see Art and its Dark Side – Introduction. I also used the title of one of his works (rather on the same theme as the work above) “First Time in Japan” as the title and cover image of my 1995 book of Poems published by Anvil. It includes a poem with that title inspired by the painting.
