Woman Reading (1935) — Pablo Picasso

  1. I guess this would be a good place and time to tell a story about Picasso and Gertrude Stein that Leo Steinberg told us when he was doing his semester’s seminar on Picasso in the mid 70’s. It was when Stein had first met Picasso and she invited him to dinner. Her friends were there also. Picasso reached across the table to grab the bread, making a socially gauche gesture, and Stein slapped his hand and said, “No! That’s mine!” Saving him from any embarrassment.
