  1. I understood not a word of the recitation. The cadence and mood of the dialogue caused that same chill I get when reading some of Poe’s darker works. A most elegant rendering of black & white. What B&W film was invented for. The more romantic of Physicists now define dark as the area from where light has escaped. Excellent use of subject and medium. Interesting interplay of focal planes. Great contrast between malleable and solid. Matter and spirit. Movement and stasis. The formality of the traditional Old World Czechoslovakian manner. Generations gone by. A dark and brooding masterpiece to watch on a brilliantly bright day.
