Girl Reading in a Salon — Giovanni Boldini

  1. The style in this painting is… confusing to me. Such a lot of detail in some places (like the pattern in the carpet), but then little detail in the figure itself. Looked at his other works and it seems like he’s three painters in one: his portraits look completely different in style, and then there are his more ‘arty’ pictures, the reclining nudes etc, which I assume is the kind of work he did for art’s sake. Interesting stuff. If you want to see a creepy one, check out his “Model and the Mannequin”: http://www.giovanniboldini.org/The-Model-And-The-Mannequin-large.html

  2. There is a wonderful portrait of Muriel and Consuelo Vanderbilt by Boldini – part of the permanent collection at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
