This one’s a lot more substantive than the teaser that came out earlier this year.

Reblogged this on Catherine McCallum and commented:
Years ago my eldest son introduced me to the work of Hayao Miyazaki and I’ve been a fan ever since. His film Spirited Away seemed the most innovative animated film I’d seen, despite its retro use of traditional 2D techniques at a time when 3D animation had become standard. It was the genius of Miyazaki’s imagination that made it so unforgettable and one of the greatest animated films of all time.

Can’t wait.
By the way, I wouldn’t describe Hayao Miyazaki’s use of 2D techniques as “retro”. In Japan, 2D is standard because people prefer it that way (thank God).

You and me both. ‘3’D looks like a set of flats. I still get dizzy remembering the petrified forest viewed through a Viewmaster. I liked the 3D 180º dome Imax documentary of collecting space junk because in space there is no ambient light reflected from varying angles, so that objects appear flat anyway. But I was afraid the mechanical glasses I had to wear were going to eat my eyeballs. Smell-o-vision would have been of no benefit. Just high grade rubber and O2 from a tank. Miyazaki is an artistic genius, to use a well-worn cliche, and I am looking forward to this film.
