Mr. Vollmann is 54, heterosexual and married with a daughter in high school. He began cross-dressing seriously about five years ago. Sometimes he transforms himself into a woman as part of a strange vision quest, aided by drugs or alcohol, to mind-meld with a female character in a book he’s writing. Other times it’s just because he likes the “smooth and slippery” feel of women’s lingerie.
From another profile on William T. Vollmann, this time in The New York Times. The profile centers around Vollmann’s latest book, The Book of Dolores.
You may recall Vollmann’s previous adventures in cross-dressing.

If that is what it takes for him to e happy and comfortable in his own body then I say “rock that eye makeup and lingerie”.

Bill T is about as close to being comfortable in his skin as Brad Pitt is as far from being uncomfortable in his. That right there is a picture of a man hanging on to a tiny plastic dinghy in the middle of the roiling psychic sea. God bless him. I hope they shove that Nobel in his hand before his hand shoves his head in an oven.

Having been laughed at for advocating William Vollmann by both the risible Gene Gregorits and the confoundedly arrogant Jeff VanderMeer (when I told him about Vollmann’s fights with editors), I feel even more vindicated by posting these pictures of this superior writer.
