That poor animal. That’s just terrible. The photo reeks of sadness. Why I do not go to zoos any more, even ‘natural’ settings ones. I saw two snakes get it on in the Seattle zoo, and two Mountain Lions do their thing in the San Francisco zoo. When the lion roared, people ran from other exhibits to see what was going on. The male dismounted before they got there and both of them looked at me as if to say, ‘can’t get no privacy’.

Thank you. I feel better now. I guess it gets to me since I identify with the animal.

It is an effective painting to me. I like the renaissance of literal painting – hyper-realism? The expression through the technique. Painting lost me for a number of years after deKooning because it seemed that self-expresssion dominated technique, with the result that people could smear any thing around on a surface and label it communication. Have you been following the funny paper cartoon, ‘Luann’, recently? A series about art class. Somebody bought a toilet bowl because he thought it was a smiley face.
