I would venture a guess that inside he was as all living humans, bone and muscle, gristle and guts and spongy stuff and blood and juice and sh*t and p*ss. I like the painting, not what it would mean to an Art 101 teacher. From the pleasantness of his countenance I guess that Courbet liked his old man. Not so with some of the other artists’ depictions of their fathers that were on biblioklept’s website Sunday. It’s too bad the pose here is dated and seems dated now. But then, maybe Courbet knew about Art 101 and didn’t want a big discussion of his father’s hand to distract from the countenance portrayed.
