I still remember the first time I picked up Roberto Bolaño’s Romantic Dogs, in the summertime at Village Books, browsing slowly without intent. I’d never heard of him before, never read any of his novels, but I saw that cover: the profile of a young man, a disgruntled look on his face, tattoo on his upper arm, the off kilter presentation. As soon as I opened it up I knew his work would have a lasting influence on me.
