  1. I just finished watching this a little bit ago. I thought Greta Gerwig did really well, painfully so at times. This film was great.

My quick review of FRANCES HA, which I will bury here (my quick review, that is, not FRANCES HA) in a comment because I don’t have the energy right now to do this properly: My quick review of FRANCES HA: Fantastic stuff, witty and charming, gorgeous black and white, great story about a person who is “not a real person yet,” a person (Frances) who can’t quite square her dreams to reality; a film about the disasters of aging out of your demographic. There is not an ounce of fat on this film—Baumbach lets quick fragments, short shots, tricky little moments tell his story; he trusts the audience enough not to underline anything too heavily. Better than his last film GREENBERG and as good as his best film MARGOT AT THE WEDDING. The film is not so much an homage to Woody Allen’s MANHATTAN as it is an update, a response (one freed from all the icky baggage to boot)—and it’s better than anything Whit Stillman’s done in years. Those who hate Baumbach’s films already know they will hate it, but I loved it.
